Bandi Chhor Diwas

October 20

Bandi Chhor Diwas (also known as Bandi Chhor Divas) is a significant Sikh festival celebrated to commemorate the release of Guru Hargobind and 52 other Hindu kings from Gwalior Fort in 1619. The name “Bandi Chhor Diwas” translates to “Day of Liberation” or “Prisoner Release Day”.

Here are some key points about Bandi Chhor Diwas:

  • Historical Significance: Guru Hargobind was imprisoned by Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who agreed to release him on the condition that he would leave the fort alone. However, Guru Hargobind had a special cloak made with 52 tassels, allowing all 52 imprisoned kings to hold onto it and leave the fort with him.
  • Celebrations: The festival is celebrated with Nagar Kirtan (processions), Akhand Paath (continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib), Diya lighting, fireworks, and langar (community kitchen).
  • Timing: Bandi Chhor Diwas often coincides with Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, and is celebrated with similar festive activities
